Facebook Messenger can be beneficial or a nuisance depending on your point of view. On the one hand, it lets you text groups of people for free without needing everyone’s phone number. On the other hand, it forces you to install a new app and can cause irritation by delivering nonstop notifications whenever someone sends a message.
This is especially annoying with group chats as this can cause your smartphone to beep constantly often regardless of whether the attached messages are relevant. Fortunately, it is quite easy to stop this spam without having to uninstall the app or leave the conversation.
In Your Web Browser
Go to the Messenger website, click the Cog Icon and select Settings. The checkbox next to Sounds can turn the beeping on or off depending on your preferences. You can also choose not to be spammed for individual conversations by checking the box next to Mute Conversation on the right. You will have the choice of turning this feature off for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours or forever.
On the Android
When in Messenger, tap the Cog Icon. You can then tap Notifications & Sounds and toggle On and Off depending on whether you want to receive hundreds of unwanted messages. For single conversations, simply hold one of them and then select Mute Notifications. You can turn off the beeping for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours or forever depending on your tolerance levels.
On the iPhone
Once you’re in Messenger, tap Settings and then tap Notifications. You’ll have a choice of whether to turn the spam off for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours or 24 hours. To silence individual conversations, swipe left on the offending item and select Mute. Again, you have a choice of how long you want your phone to remain at peace for.
