Fans of various University of Michigan athletic teams and programs have been bombarded with offensive posts after hackers hacked their social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter.
Kim Kardashian’s “bloated frame” in her “younger sister’s bikini” were some of the headlines fans of the university’s athletic teams were hit with early last Wednesday morning. Investigators said that the incident appears to be “a fairly open-and-close case of online hacking.”
So far most of the teams have posted apologies to their fans and spoke of their efforts to resolve the matter quickly, which appears to be the case. All the social media accounts that were hacked have now had the offensive posts removed.
“We want to acknowledge that our Facebook pages for Michigan Football, Basketball, and Athletics have been hacked,” was the Michigan Athletics post from their restored Twitter account.
The posts ranged from posts about sex and extreme selfies, to celebrity ‘click bait’ style headlines, along with historical photos and posts about alien invasions. “Aliens have landed in the Big House” was one of the alien inspired social media posts.
“This is an unprecedented issue, and we are taking all necessary precautions to protect the safety and security of our other numerous social media properties,” said the social media director for U-M, Nikki Sunstrum. She also said in an email to The Ann Arbor News that they have been working directly with the Department of Public Safety and Security, as well as Michigan Athletic, and have since rectified the issue.
